You should ask the Queen of Canada to take up the issue with the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

I die a little inside every time I see fake syrup.

We get the good proper stuff too.

But at £5.49 for 250ml, most people aren’t as silly as me,

and so buy the much cheaper Bobby’s Maple Flavour Syrup which you can get from the Iceland supermarket for £1 for the same quantity.

Last time I was in the UK (we always go the self-catering route, which is much more fun), I was in a small town grocer and asked for maple syrup — it was a huge confusion because in the US, we use that term generically for any sugary syrup, with maple being the best and most expensive. But the guy had literally never seen it, so we ended up with a tin of syrup that looked (and smelled) just like polyurethane varnish. I think it was basically like Karo syrup. But at least it wasn’t cheapo HFCS stuff like Aunt Jemima.

It’s those minor cultural barriers that create all the fun.
